Fact Checkers

Those emails that get forwarded thousands of times, look plausible and come from your trusted friends, may not be true. Before you click the "forward" button yourself, make sure you are not propagating falsehoods. These fact-checking websites can help prevent embarrassment and avoid damage to our cause.

  • FactCheck.org -- We are a nonpartisan, nonprofit "consumer advocate" for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics.
  • PolitiFact.com -- PolitiFact is a project of the St. Petersburg Times to help you find the truth in American politics.
  • Scambusters -- Unfortunately, as we hear every single day, being smart is NOT enough to protect yourself from dangerous Internet scams, frustrating spam, or devious identity theft
  • Snopes -- Urban Legends Reference Pages
  • Truth or Fiction -- Get the truth about rumors, inspirational stories, virus warnings, hoaxes, scams, humorous tales, pleas for help, urban legends, prayer requests, calls to action, and other forwarded emails.

It's usually wise to fact-check the fact checkers, because they might have an agenda too.
